Insurance

We have a small (10) herd of dexters including a bull and are just in the process of building a barn which will not be in sight of the house. Can anyone give me any (independent) advice about what sort of insurance which should be looking at. I am assuming some sort of 3rd party and contents. I made special note of the bull as he got bored a few days ago and decided to join the ride from a local equestrian school. No damage done but it has focussed my attention!! Thanks for any and all advice.

It can be quite expensive. Have a look at the various smallholder magazines which often have brokers adds. We found the best way forward was to have a policy that combined the house,barn and public liability. We did not think it worth insuring the animals themselves.
Try the NFU, although we found that our local broker beat them. (Jennifer Knowles, Talbot insurance - 01539 732000)

We are with Cornish Mutual in Truro and found them very helpful. They send someone to see you, go through what you need and can cover everything.

We are with Ottery Insurance services who do a smallholders policy covering 3rd party liability, cover for our barns, animals and machinery,fencing etc.

thank you for all of the advice I can echo your comments Tony Cornish Mutual have been very helpful. NFU did not seem very interested in my business. Thanks again

Strangely, I have had exactly the same results - NFU disinterest and a great (and much better value) service from Cornish Mutual.
