Hi! I need a bit of information and advice about the three unregistered Dexters that I keep.
Firstly like most unregistered dexters they almost certainly came from stock that were originally pedigree and registered .
I live in a fairly remote area geographically,( Pwllheli, North Wales )which is hardly a hot bed of Dexter breeders . There is one chap in the next village who I have been in touch with but apart from that nothing .
I know where the stock came from up untill three owners ago,the chap who had them was some sort of vicar or something and then the trail goes cold . He kept them in the Pwllheli area but he only lived here for a short time and then moved .
Before moving he sold them to one party who sold them to another party who then sold them to me . If you can follow that, then you are a better man than me Gungadin but then they were cheap ! They were only young when I bought them so they obviously hadn't any papers .
Now to the second part ! I have ( God Wliling ) plenty of time and I would eventually like to breed them up into fully registered stock . Can it be done ?and hows the best way to set about it ? With my limited knowledge I think that they are reasonable specimens but unfortunately they are currently running with an unregistered bull from the same source .

John C, I assume you have their passports and these should have all the names and addresses of all their owners which they have had. If you haven't got their passports (which must always travel with the animal) I'm afraid you are in deep and, I think, unretrievable trouble.

The Dexter Cattle Society will provide all the information about what you can and cannot do about breeding up and registering animals. It confuses me, but you might have better luck.

I've got the passports don't worry!
I know the two previous owners but not the vicar who had the original stock . Does anybody remember selling the original stock to the vicar? I know theres no way back towards getting these animals registered but at least I would know a bit about their breeding !
What about my question with regarding being able to breed up ? Can it still be done ?

It might be worth contacting BCMS to see if you can get a history of your animals movements which might just give you another contact. If you think there is any chance that they were once registered or their dam/sire was registered then perhaps the office could help through their ear tag nos. They might have been birth notified.
For the future, it is important that any calves born are birth notified to the DCS within a month of birth which will start the process. The rules for foundation animals has recently changed but there is a registration committee in the DCS which would help you in your quest. Hope that is of use. Best wishes, Fiona

I really do need to know if its posible to breed up future fully registered stock from my non pedigree animals ?

I think as Fiona said you need to contact the DCS for the latest info. Regulations have changed relatively recently which is why none of us on this list feels able to give a water tight reply. It will depend on many things such as if these cattle were originally birth notified or registered, if ownerships have changed without the society being notified , are all their identification tags etc in order.

This may all seem ridiculously complicated but there have to be rules to ensure that pedigrees are as registered otherwise the whole system carries no credibility. The Dexter Cattle
Society has a committee which looks at registration issues such as this.

I recently asked the DCS about registering non pedigree animals. Its very complicated but basically I think it takes 4 generations to become 'true Dexter' again and each generation must be sired by a pedigree dexter bull and each heifer calf born inspected by the DCS along with their mother soon after their birth (costing approx £30 a visit).
