You find some nice kind people who look as though they will care for your animals and sell them some Dexter females. Of course they have never had cattle before and are naturally apprehensive about things. But you tell them not to worry you are only a phone call away, getting them in calf is no problem at all as you have a bull which you hire out from time to time and it won't be any trouble to bring it round when the time comes (for the usual fee of course). They don’t need to worry about a thing because you'll take all that they can produce (at a price) providing of course, that they achieve a certain weight.

As these nice people are only doing this for a hobby they don't actually realise what the cattle are really costing to feed and as winter progresses and the hay merchant’s invoices arrive they think of the money they will get back soon - bit just like a saving scheme really.

Of course the law of averages means that half of the calves will be female and well, they don't like the idea of you sending them into slaughter like the steers because they have got attached to them. So time passes and inevitably they get over run and decide to put an ad in the local paper but of course when you are desperate to sell everyone wants them for nothing.

Suddenly you receive a phone call from the nice people explaining the situation asking whether you know of anybody who wants to buy some Dexter females because they have been offered a pittance. You are a bit over stocked yourself but as a favour you are willing to try and find them a good home and agree to pay them what they had been offered on the open market which, is no where near the price they originally paid you. After thinking for a while the nice people agree because well, you have been so helpful giving them advise, lending them a bull, stepping up in their hour of need.

It would be great to supply more to this pub, but every four weeks is fine. They have had 146 Dexters off us since opening 11 years ago! As someone said recently, their customers have eaten a whole herd! We know the beef is the best and the feedback from everyone is fantastic, but we find it's best not to push to get more into this type of establishment - we don't want all our eggs (beef) in one basket.

The pub (run very successfully by two brothers) was sold very quickly at the end of August, but the new company who have taken it on were soon on the phone to ensure we would continue supplying Boram Dexter beef to them.

I would regard sellin gone complete beast at a time as a major success - selling 13 a year to the same customer is the stuff of dreams.

Definitely a customer to cherish and an act to try to follow - I assume that you have already delivered the Xmas card?
