It amazes me how many people have looked at this post and have not replied. It surprises me that so many breeders (and I assume that many of them are) do not know what their animals are worth.

I think a lot of the views must be those google 'bots'.

Recently killed 3 steers, one for family, two for sale. Sale carcase weights 142.5 and 136.5kg deadwt, sorry don't have total sellable weight. Divided into 12 boxes each carcase, £100 per box. Butchering and killing cost £333 each, transport by myself to Paisley. Numerous good reports on the beef itself and several mention what good value it is.

I will be short of steers to meet demand next year.

I've been on the Eblex but you have to hunt round it's not so clear however, they did predict that prices would improve late 14 and into 15 and it would appear that this is happening.

Sold 190kg deadweight non short to butchers this week, half each for £4 per kg, i have paid my fuel and killing and cutting, cutting into quarters only, probably around £140 /150 costs.
Have another hanging at 197kg, will cut and bag for 8 boxes, hope to sell at £12 per kg as we have before.....

So 190 d/w (my estimations) processing losses 73.2 kgs saleable meat 116.8 kgs purchased for £760 @ £4 kg (£380 each)
Assuming butchers in your area get the same as you would £12 kg then £1401.60 less their additional cutting costs @ say £1 kg = £116 then their mark up is £1285.60 so that's £642.80 each

Your mark up £760 - £140/£150 = £620/£610 less costs of breeding and feeding the creature.

You may do better selling it in boxes although you still have to sell it and I don't know what you are going to have to pay to have it cut and boxed in your area.
Taking current l/w prices £1.82 kg estimated l/w 340 so you would have got £619

Yes, £262.80 if you deduct the initial purchase price of £380. It sounds alot but there are more hidden costs.... tell me about it.

Fixed costs will always be the most significant, unless the throughput is high enough.

My bigger steer will be sold in boxes and i will realise the full price, i hope, but needs must i am afraid, i cant find that many box customers, i have another steer to go as well before christmas and i need to sell that in boxes. I find it hard work i am afraid, having a commercial breed would be brilliant!!!.

Sold 3 steers end September to a butcher. Age range 24 to 27 months, carcass weight 191, 127 and 166 Kg. Deadweight. Received £3.65 kg. This compares to £3.90 Kg September 2013. The only costs incurred were diesel for an 80 mile round trip. These cattle were finished off grass and received no concentrates. Had these cattle been sold through the local market we would have received £1.20 - £1.40 kg live weight ? We occasionally sell beef in freezer packs. Mixed cuts equating to quarter of the animal, last were sold at £3.50/Lb (actual boned out meat sold) Butchering costs £100. This beast had a carcass weight of 129Kg and realised £730 . Whilst some breeders are able to charge more for packs of meat, we price our meat to ensure we can sell the whole animal and feel we get a good return for the size of carcass.
