Dexter Veal

I have got a few emails from www.farmison.com advertising farm produce, made me laugh considering what we do. so i was having a nosey and low and behold they do veal, and its from Dexters!!!

i almost spat my tea out....... what must that be like 8 month old dexter beef. it will be tiny! the farm is Abbots close farm, somewhere in yorkshire maybe? anyone know if it.

seems a tragedy to me.

i got a voucher for 40% off on there so i ordered a load of cheese, which comes from avery good cheese monger who i used to supply, so i jumped at the chance. you can use the voucher code LC2013 and you will get 40% couldnt believe it!! but you need to do it before midnight tonight.

Well I just ordered some being interested in what it tastes like. Wow it's expensive. Even with the 40% off I paid nearly £35 for 1.64 kg of meat (and no fillet).

Oh I see, I'm the guinea pig . Fell for that one hook line and sinker! Anywayup, it'll arrive on Tuesday and will be cooked Wednesday with a bit of luck. I'm going to bet it'll be tender and tasteless, but we'll see.

Hmmm we bought some ham off them at Christmas because it was advertised as rare breed, we often keep a few rare breed pigs for pork and it is always wonderful - well this was awful ham, mostly inedible gristle and fat, the lean had a nasty taste to it, we threw it away. I have tried to speak to Farmison about it since and failed but they still keep sending me adverts, even by email but never answer my email complaints!!!

I DO hope the veal is MUCH MUCH better and they aren't ruining the reputation of Dexter!

We had their veal (didn't know it was Dexter if it was) at last years Taste Awards as part of York Food Festival, it was quite tender, and very tasteless, and the service was terribly slow, but that's nothing to do with the veal...

It was being served up because it had won the award in 2010.

Oh dear! I'm really looking forward to my meal on Wednesday I haven't eaten any veal for probably 40 years because of the cruelty back then. I have assumed, hopefully correctly, that this must be British Rose Veal? It has to be doesn't it?

We had Dexter veal tonight, just fried with some garlic, and enjoyed it. It didn't have a huge flavour, it was delicate, tender, very fine grained (a lot more so than "grown up" Dexter beef) and it was lean.

It gets a 9 out of 10 from me. A good Dexter steak would be 11 out of 10, but still very good and a nice change.

The veal itself was good quality, but Farmison delivered it (on time) in a polystyrene container but only put in 2 "tubes" of ice in, which wasn't anywhere near enough. Result was that by the time it arrived they had thawed out. Although the whole package was still slightly chilled, it was borderline and certainly not satisfactory IMO.

I much prefer the gel packs, water doesn't seem to absorb much heat by comparison
