York Rare breed Sales Prices

Post by ann »

Hello

I'm a bit late posting this, been rather busy since the sale.

Registered cattle
Cows with out calves 5 forward
top price 300gns
lowest price 130gns
average price 152.00gns :(

Cows with calves 6 forward
top price 410gns
lowest price 290gns
average price 351gns

heifers 10 forward age between 1 yr to 2yrs
top price heifer had run with bull but was not pd 410gns
lowest price 200gns
average price 275gns

unreg cows inc calves 4 forward
top price 400gns
lowest price 240gns
average price 345 gns

cow no calf 290gns

heifers 8 forward
top price 390gns
lowest price 120gns\
average price 247gns

2011 heifer in calf date of birth was given as 15.2.11 and according to the seller she was definitely in calf!! 300gns (I hope she gave them some luck money as they may need it.
Steers 6 forward
Top price 380gn sept 2010 steer
3 sold as a batch aged from 12/2011 to 9/2010 290gns each
lowest price 120gns for steer 5/11
average 236.00

non short unreg bull 420gns probably worth more if he had been sent straight to kill

yearling bull birth notified 110gns

Some of the cows being sold where quite old, all in all a bit of a mixed bunch but nothing that looked like a welfare issue which there has been in previous years.
I'm afraid the dealers where out and I am told by a reliable source that some of the Shorthorn heifers where brought for slaughter which is a shame as they where nice.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Steers fetched good prices, to be expected I guess for the time of year & good grass growth this year.

I just culled 6 old or barren Pedigree Dexter cows, two very light, the rest pretty average and I got double the average prices paid for cows without calves. And my top price was £408. Doesn't make any sense!

dear ann, my heifers had wrong date in catalogue also some others, so the youngster could have had the wrong date on but maybe not, had to keep telling auctioneer jean :)

I have to agree with Clive re cull prices and at least if you send them straight to cull you know what has happen to them plus your saving money from auctioneers fees and transport fees. No on likes to kill their old cows but surely it is kinder than having them passed from pillar to post and someone else making a quick buck out of them.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

It also does the breed a lot more good to send to cull - the shows & sales are supposed to be a shop window.
