De-horn at birth or wait ?

Post by robin walker »

I normally dehorn the first few days but i know other breeders wait until the horn has grown some , this they claim allows the head to broaden thus giving a better shape . I understand what is being said but is this the done thing or just causing extended stress ?.

I usually dehorn and castrate at 4 to 6 weeks, i don't like leaving the dehorning any longer as it gets more difficult to do a good clean job. I hate to see a bad dehorning job, i think it devalues a breeding female or bull.

We had one three weeks old but the vet said she needed to wait until he could do it properly and she was very small. So she was done at 6 weeks.

He's done ours between 1-8 weeks.
