i think i am probably worrying to much but how long would a heifer drip milk before calfing, she is bagged up nicely but hasnt lenghtend behind at all but slightly swollen,

Usually as calving approaches the ligaments on either side of the tail head slacken. If you run your hand over that area in a cow at other times, you will feel a tight band going across from the spine to the pin bones. This tight band should get very slack and relaxed in the last three days before calving.

If there is any doubt that something may be happening but no outward sign, you should do a gentle internal examination, or get someone who knows what they are doing to check for you.
