Cow Ties

I have taken a bit of a gamble on eBay and bought a job lot of halters which includes 59 off 'cow ties'.

I have done a Google search and found them being sold by various rope product distributors but nothing on their use.

Can anyone tell me what these are used for?

They are made from 12mm polypropylene rope 1.2m in length with a loop at one end and a wooden toggle at the other.

When I was a kid - 50 years ago - my dad's dairy herd was housed in individual stalls in a shippon - a forerunner of the cubicle house - and they were tethered using either rope or chain ties. The toggle end of the rope went through the eye forming a loop that went around the cow's neck, then through a ring at the front of the stall. Sometimes it had a wooden block at the end. The weight of the wood kept the rope taut, but if the animal needed to move, the rope could be pulled back until the block came up underneath the ring.
I believe the SAS use something similar to make climbing ropes. Each man in the squad carries a short cow tie, by joining them together, they make a long rope. Are you planning to form a Dexter assault team??

Thank you for that David. It is obvious now you mention the chain ties I've seen plenty of them but not the rope ones.

I will probably stick them back on eBay as individual ties and see if there is any interest.
