dexter angus beef

I keep forgetting to post about how our dexter angus beef went.
well our fist weekend of markets after christmas confirms it must have been good. all the regulars were asking for the dexter beef, as the stuff they had before christmas was great. i actually got phone calls from customers who bought the ribs, one of which was 6 ribs long, to say how good they were. one customer who was a farmer said they had a competition to gues the breed, they were all wrong because no one knew it was a dangus! i had people in the town stop me to say the christmas beef was good, and another lady at the local garage tell me how good the beef was they had at a party and it was my beef.

i had a popeseye steak off it and i thought it was very good, i dont get enough of the dexter to say it was different to the pure. We only ever get the bits no-one else wants!! brisket, or the onglet before anyone else has the chance!

whilst i am on did all other beef sellers have a good christmas? we did certainly up on last year, but definately no worth all the hours of work in the butchery. i say every year that i wont do it again.

Dangus has a good reputation. The Royal family used raise Dexter-Angus for their own table and they used to have beef for Christmas apparently. We're crossing with an Angus, but Angus-Dexter in our case, and we're doing pure as well but only from the smaller non-chondro ones. The first calves are being born now, had 12 so far. They look good, all are black and I am fairly sure they are all polled as well.

On the American board, interestingly, they say that any cross with dexter makes good beef, including crossing with breeds such as Highland, obviously taking care with size. I think it's a great opportunity for dexter and could be yet another lift for the breeds popularity.

I'm also going to do Dexus in a couple of years time as well.

Be interested in the weights for the dexter/angus cross compared to pure dexter.

Colin, I spoke to someone recently who does Angus-Dexter and he's getting deadweights of 260-290 when they are killed at 25-27 months. My pure Dexters are about 200-225 with very few outside that range, although that will be going down because I'm concentrating only on the smaller non-shorts from now on for my dexter beef.
