Hi All,

What size halter/s do you guys use for your dexters? Someone told me sheep halters but their heads aren't that small, lol! Can anyone help? It's for a short heifer.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jamie,

We have used sheep halters for the calves and pony halters for the heifers and cows. You can get the flat webbing type or the round rope type.

They can be found in most towns in farm supplies shops, ours are made by Richey.

I don't know if others have experiened this, but I've tried leaving the flat webbing type on the animal with the purpose of making it easier to catch and halter train. But no matter how careful I am not to have it too tight, I have sometimes found that within a week or two they have started to rub bald patches under their chins or across their muzzle.

So I tend to use the rope type on an as needed basis.

For Colin's purpose horse head collars do not too bad a job.

Thanks everyone. Who on here uses head collars on their animals all the time? Sounds a good idea but I would be worried they would get caught.

We have been catching a calf every evening and bringing her and her Mum in for the night. That way she has been led in at night and out again in the morning. We have just stopped but we did it from birth to 8 weeks but didn't leave a headcollar or halter on, just caught her but I think maybe she, like her Mum is perhaps exceptionally quiet.

Its not a difficult job to shorten the nose band on a halter.

You can undo the ring knot and move it along the noseband section.

Possibly best to practice on an old frayed, or broken one first.
