Last year for the first time we had a steer killed and then sold some of the meat in 10 kg packs @£6.75per kg to family and friends.

The big question is though, What should we be charging for a 10kg box of mixed cuts. we live in west wales so prehaps people could tell me what is being charged per kg in their area.

£6.75 is low I feel, I doubt that would cover cost. People are selling fillet for nearly £40 a kilo, sirloin well into the £20's, and I charge very good prices also for anything with a rib in it.

Average price for a mixed box last year was somewhere between £8.00 - 9.00 a kilo. I would think it is higher now as beef prices have gone up loads since then.

If you want to see prices from different farms and averages, for cuts also, then you can get them from the DBO Info site at info.dexterbeefonline.co.uk, go to Downloads. PS. The site has just been re-written with new software, so please let me know if you don't have success.

The prices are due to be updated, but they will give you an idea.

The last beef I sold in 10kg packs was priced at £10 per kilo, I know of others in this area who are getting up to £12 a kilo. It depends on how you aproach your customer and how hard you sell it.

thank you both for replying and it will certainly make me look a bit closer at costings. Of course the main competitor for me comes in the form of the welsh black breed, still i can only hope that some people will see the fine quality that is achieved from dexters.

If any more people would contribute their prices i would be very grateful.

I've swopped a 60kg side of beef on the hook for 12 x big bales haylage @ £18/bale.
6.5kg sirloin on the bone for 3 pairs of kippers, third of a salmon, pair of finnan haddocks & 3 packs of smoked salmon.
I like barter!

Yes the barter system is a good one Louisa - I am swapping some beef for a little time from someone so that our few animals get well looked after when we are away soon looking after our new grandson and daughter in law for a few days. :D
