Dexter Identification - Unregistered Cattle?

Happy New Year All,

I recently took one of our bulls to a local family who wanted to hire him to serve the four Dexter cows which they had bought a year or so ago. I asked for details of the pedigrees so that I could check which of our bulls was most suitable.

Unfortunately, although the animals had been sold as pedigree the vendor had only provided one green pedigree card. On checking I found that the pedigree corresponded to an ear tag on a black cow even though the pedigree states that she should be red. I have tried the ear tag numbers on the Dexter Cattle Society web page but no matches were found (except for the black/red cow). To help these people out and to encourage them to join the society are there any other steps which can be taken? The cattle are all short and clearly are Dexters but can their pedigree be re-established in any way?

The vendor is a local member so I suppose a call might be worth a try although the mis-tagged animal issue doesn't fill me with confidence.

Sometimes a calf can be registered red and then turn black. I've had one or two.

I don't feel that having a black cow with a certificate that says red is such a big crime. As a new Dexter owner, I registered two of my heifer calves as red, but one has now turned black and the other is half and half. Sue Archer advised me that minor issues such as colour or horned/polled can easily be changed, the most important thing is to get the animal registered. I'd be much more concerned about the animals that were sold as pedigree (presumably at a pedigree price) but don't appear to be registered. My family has had the same problem with a rare breed ram where the pedigree certificate was promised, but in the end was found never to have been issued.

Hi Malcolm, best bet is contact Sue in the office 02476 692300.
If any of the animals have ever been registered then in theory they should be traceable, especially by eartag.
Copy pedigree would cost £10 i think
