I'm sure this topic must have been discussed in the past, but i wondered if anyone could enlighten me as to the likely outcome of putting a black bull with a red cow

Thanks ian
Having read the infomation i come to the conclusion that a black bull will only produce black or dun offspring from a red cow. is that correct?

It depends, if your black bull carries dun or carries red. If it carries red it will produce a black or a red offspring when mated with a red cow, if it carries dun it will only be able to produce a black offspring with this mating.
I think that is correct.

I only had black bulls but I got plenty of red calves from mating with red cows. I also had a dun steer from a black x red mating.

I was in contact with Rebecca Perez from the above site, and found the information very enlightening.

Peter, I'm wondering about your dun calf from a redXred? I thought that was an impossibility. Could it be that one 'red' parent is actually a dun or that there has been a parentage mixup?

I've got a black bull from mating a red bull X dun cow. So what will the black bull be capable of producing?

Clive, He would definitely be carrying both red and dun, so could produce all three colours, depending on what colour(s) the cow was carrying.
