Hi everyone

After doing lots of research on animals at the sale and finding out that there was in fact some short red dexter for sale, circumstances stopped me from going, i was extremely annoyed.

So could any of you that went tell me what sort of prices the short dexters made from Mrs S Turner?

Would be gratefull, thanks

Hi Cindy, I attended and purchased 2 Dexters. 1 was from Mrs Turner and I paid £170 for a 2003 pedigree cow and the other was £120 for a 2004 pedigree cow. Really pleased I think. The prices were good but I came away after my purchases as I had the other half with me and knew there was a posibility I could get carried away! Good sale though if I have bought good stock. I hope I have!
Best wishes

Good prices indeed! You'd get more for them at the moment at the cull market! I've heard of over £400 for a Dexter cull cow.

PS. Welcome aboard Julie - Great website. Prices are apparently a little depressed at the moment. I say "apparently" because I think they're only depressed because people think they're depressed. I would make between £900-1400 per animal as beef, less costs without any problem. It doesn't make sense. Make hay while the sun shines if you're a buyer. Which reminds me, anyone seen the sun lately?

Thank you Clive. After posting my reply I felt quite guilty about the prices I paid but I was the highest bidder, what can you do? They have a lovely home even if their new mum knows nothing!
Best wishes

Sun, Clive, what's that? And it seems making a good price for Dexters (or any other minority breed) if you are selling is as likely as making hay this year once again. Hey Ho. And to think I turned down the offer of a full load of hay a few months back because I (and my contractor) thought we would be OK this year. How wrong can you be.

Sylvia - The sun is a round yellow thing in the sky that they have in Australia and America...in fact I think they've bought the rights to it. It looks like this :;): but without the smile.

I didn't mean to make you feel guilty Julie on your debut, no need to be, a market is a market. But it is a funny one of late. Key advice for all new Dexter keepers, if you do not know already, is to learn what a short and non-short is before you breed anything. I did it afterwards....wrong way to do it! There is a topic at the moment going on started by cyndy (strawberriesclint) who was asking, so that's worth reading. It is baffling at first but it's actually simple; it's just the use of the terms short and non-short which throw you off track.

Thanks for the description Clive, round and yellow eh? I'm just trying to think very hard whether we've seen anything like that in Wales in the last few months. Nope, I don't think so. If that Swiss black hole thing was up and running I would have thought that it might have been sucked into that but I don't think they are firing that up until Wednesday. Now there is a date to watch !!

Dizzydex don’t feel guilty, if you hadn’t bought they would probably have been picked up by a dealer who would either have made a packet, or sold them for slaughter. My advice would be to run them for three weeks to see if your steer can tell you if they come bulling. If you do see them being ridden by him take a note of the dates and make enquiries locally to find out from a neighbouring farmer where they go for AI., and order Dexter semen. Ask the Dexter Society, which has straws for sale, they will transfer them to your local depot, ask for a long leg bull then you know you are safe. If your steer shows no interest in three weeks it will be worth having the vet to look at them and see if he can get them cycling. They are very unlikely to be in calf. The green card should give you the name of the last owner, and I would have thought you could ask them for that information. I hope you will have a long and happy relationship with your Dexters.
