Does anyone consider that communication from our Society with Genus (or other AI companies) would encourage them to stock semen even if only a limited amount off a small number of bulls?
As Louise indicated there are consirable accumative costs attached to keeping private stock in their flasks.

Unless I'm mistaken there is a bull on the Genus books now, (Knotting Saturn) see website (http://www.genusbreeding.co.uk/content. ... exter.mspx)
I'm not how much straws are etc. but it may be useful for anyone that does not have access to a bull.

Hi Dennis,
Genus do sell Saturn of Knotting semen and they charge £20.00 a dose for it plus inseminators fees!!! You can buy it from Jane Paynter for £10.00 a dose plus a little for handling. Who in there right mind is going to buy from Genus?
Genus really do take people to the cleaners with their charges that is why I try and sell semen as cheaply as I can. I am happy if I can cover costs, make a small profit and improve the breed.

Not all AI companies charge for storage- we are in Staffordshire and use a company called R Breeders -they have had some of my Dexter semen (Butterbox Morris) in store for several years wth no charges I think they may do Shropshire/Cheshire possibly Derbyshire. The contact no I have is 07850 006870 I think they charge about £15/service and are always very helpful.

Beryl, the only way I can think of is for members to get together in an area which has the same Genus flask and share costs. The semen would have to be in one persons name with Genus BUT that person could have cows on different holdings couldn't they? This is what I did in the past for small herds round here. It was much easier when you could pay the inseminator cash at service - I don't know how the billing would work now as it is all direct debit, maybe an area group could work something out for its members, maybe do a deal with Genus. [Not easy!]
As Monica says there are small AI companies which are excellent if you have one near you. Phoenix breeders have Jupiter semen. Unfortunately most of the country is covered by Genus.
