A mainly skeletal defect that can be traced back to one Holstein A.I.bull used extensively world wide, which has already spread to four countries, and yet they can still advise using them to breed in attributes that the carriers may possess, apparently oblivious to whether this will really leave their future sires clear – man’s greed and stupidity!

Broomcoft, it does actually say what CVM is, complex vertebral malformation, at the beginning of this article. Since various people on this forum have stated that we, as a breed, will not be taken seriously by commercial cattle breeders while we have BDC, I thought it of interest to see what the response of another breed is to an analogous condition and what our collective reaction is.

My father and I bred a herd of 125 Friesian/Holstiens until 1991.

If the information on any sire that could possibly add CVM into that herds genetics was available to us there is absolutely no way we would ever have considered using him and contaminating the herd.

Thank you all, I agree with most of you that this gene must be stamped out.
