While it would be good to have local sales, it should be remembered that there would probably be a maximum of say 1200 potential Dexter owners throughout the country, very different from the many thousands of flock owners. To break it up into too many venues would probably defeat the purpose of trying to attract sufficient potential customers. My tentative suggestion at most would be a north and south. The Rare Breeds has always attracted a good number; folks will travel a fair distance if the entry is sufficiently attractive. I would endorse Justmalc’s suggestion that of a trial run next year, what is there to lose?
Ann my advice would be to avoid the carrier, you will then largely eliminate foot problems.

There's not that much difference Beryl. I think there are about 1,700 Lleyn flocks at the most but they will have a much higher content of farmers obviously. If a sale is too far people won't support it especially those taking the stock. Personally, I suppose my limit would be (say) about 100 miles. But yes, if it's either too far or too few in numbers attending, it wouldn't work.

There are annual sales at Skipton,Carlise and Chelford for Rare Breeds- There used to be one at Ruthin that had Spring and Autumn SAles but I think that stopped due to lack of support. Chelford used to be a good sale but has dropped off in the last three years and because its not run by the society I know of people who have bought young bulls thinking they were pedigree only to find they were only birth notified or some not even that. I think there are probably to many cattle for the number of buyers at present and with all the joys of foot and mouth and now blue tongue and of course the limitations we now have due to the transport regulations with people having to take tests if travelling over 40miles some people will think why bother!

I've put those sites with others mentioned on a map to see where there are/were. Dexter Sales Map.
Has anyone got any more where Dexters have featured or still do.

Clive, you could add Lanark, Aberdeen (spring and autumn), Dingwall (occasionally) and Oban (ocassionally). These are not exclusively dexter sales of course, but rare and minority breeds. Give the density of dexters in southwest I find it surprising that Holsworthy is the only one listed there.
