We were told by a good friend of ours, also a fellow Dexter breeder, the best way of introducing a cow/heifer into a different group to prevent bullying, is to spray/pour vinegar along the back & onto head. The smell of vinegar will stop the other Dexters from bullying her.

As we were moving cattle around in sheds today & putting a recently calved heifer with a group of calved cows we decided to give it a try - it worked. They don't like it when the smell gets up their noses!! In a very short time the heifer was left in peace.

I'm just about to move a 13 months old steer into a group of 15-20 steers and bulls. Will that work if I pour vinegar onto the steer's back and head before introducing him? Or is it only for females?

Clive...should work with males as well.....make sure the bottle has a plastic top with a hole in it, otherwise it might go in his eyes.

Let us know how you get on.

I hope this isn't an April 1st thing, I've already been taken in by the flying penguins! But I'll give it a go.
