Thanks for letting me know about the advert Rob, it is a first step. I'm now wondering whether to get half the registered cows tested too and send them as well, thereby reducing the herd to the magic formula you mention and with hindsight I should have stuck with. Wonderful thing hindsight.

Sylvia,

I think you may have more interest if you add some of your registered cows to the sale. It sounds a good idea to me.

This should could help the price of all of them.

Although most of us keep our much loved little cows primarily to provide us with steers/heifers for beef, many of us still like them to be registered. However once you have your buyer at the sale they may well be tempted to buy unregistered if equally good quality and the price is right.

Good luck!

one suggestion for your unregistered dexter cows would be to put them in calf to a Welsh black bull and sell the offspring as stores, dexters usually have loads of milk and the welsh black makes a very good cross, thats is if you decide to keep some of the unregistered ones. If you went down this route enter them on their passports as welsh Black X and don't mention the dexter part. I have a cow who is ½ dexter and ½ welsh black and her calves are always by my dexter bull and by the time they are weaned they are about twice the size of the purebred dexter steers. I sell mine to my private customers and all the feed back has been excellent

I think that if I was in a part of Wales where Welsh Black was dominant, that's what I would do. Then people would say how extra-good your WB beef was!
