Well, the pre-movement test on all my unregistered Dexters is clear.

I now have cows and calf, in-calf cows, heifers and steers (44 in total) all of which must go to bring the herd down to a manageable size.

As I only have 60 days to do this I am afraid that the only option looks like the market. I will let you know how I get on.

Big up for you Sylvia. Sometimes if you inform the Mart that a lot are coming in they might be able to ring around people they know who might be interested. Have you told Peat gleed Sec for the West Wales Group he might Email the members. Good Luck anyway.

Good luck - we have run out of grass due to a (hopefully temporary) drought so had to dispose of a bunch of yearling heifers yesterday. I suspect drought is not a UK problem

The relevant sale takes place on the 1st Friday of every month. The auctioneer called in today to evaluate the Dexters and was very complimentary about their condition. I could send them next Friday but he suggested waiting until the January sale so that he can advertise them well in advance. He also said he'd try to find private sales for them. So, more waiting. But it was certainly nice to have a professional, impartial view of my animals which was encouraging.

It is also worth noting here that the pens which are going (unregistered) are exactly the same as the pens which are staying (registered). So if anyone is looking for stock it might be worth looking here.

I'm glad the auctioneer was of use to you, it's starting to look better for you now. I didn't understand your comment that the pens going are the same as those staying? ???

Rob, my barn for the cows is split up into 5, 6 or 7 pens depending on need. I have split the Dexters into registered animals and unregistered animals. The former are staying for the moment and the latter are going. So there are 4 pens of unregistered animals who will be going and the other pens are full of registered animals.

There have been various comments on this site about what larger breeders (and with over 80 I think I might just qualify) might or might not have been doing breedingwise. So I just thought I'd make the comment that my unregistered animals look exactly the same as my registered animals, I would guess that no-one coming here would be able to tell which pens are which. They are ALL nice Dexters with or without the little green card.

I hope that clarifies matters.

Thanks Sylvia-- I totally agree with you whether your cattle have the green card or not you still need/want to breed the best you can. The problem (small) is like that other posting who wants to sell his non-registered, how much demand is there for them. If you can sell everything as meat then there is no problem being a non reg herd but that is my opinion and luckily everyone can do whatever they think is right.
