Sorry here again! We have to knowthe reason why Yvonne is going so abruptly and it would be interesting to know what are the reasons behind Mr. Neals as well. Unless these are known the problem will still be there and this situation will arise again and again. I hate to say this but it is a bit like the Welsh Rugby Coach situation. I dont know the ways and wherefores of the society but there must be a way we can show our discontent with the situation.

Doesnt it strike you as odd that in a Society like OURS when important issues like this arise OUR Council remains silent? Perhaps this topic has passed them by, perhaps they do not follow this excellent site (without which there would be no real opportunity for open dialogue), or perhaps they are too busy on the telephone discussing "how do we get out of this one?".
See you on Nov 1st. Di, can we just turn up or do we need to inform/ask someone?

Hi Rod,
You are supposed to give 10 days notice, however under the circumstances our acting chair, Felicity Thomson, will be pleased to see you attend the meeting. It would be useful let her or the secretary know by Saturday if you wish to attend because of space.

In this day and age, we should be able to say no to bullies. It appears that Yvonne is being forced out of something she really enjoys, which is totally unacceptable. I think that some council members need to be relieved of their positions if these postings are correct. I hope that the innocent council members are not given a hard time just because they are council members. I hope that Yvonne sees us standing up for her and how much she is respected.

The real problem with the DCS is that most of us are amateurs. i.e. we keep Dexters as a (sometimes) paying hobby and not as a full time living. This means that as with any "hobby" society we have the dedicated members who are knowledgable and hard working and we also have the members who enjoy running societies and making rules.
No professional society (i.e. one full of members making their livings) would put up with some of the rules and attitudes that come from the DCS.
I don't think the present society is sustainable in the long term. Heifers seem to fetch either £1,500 or £200. There is no real market for good serviceable cows anymore, just the showstars which are fought over by the members with deep pockets.
This society should stop agonising about DNA tests and the "perfect" Dexter and start organising some decent sales and help us to market our beef. I really don't think that Council as a whole has a strategy at all.

might I suggest that there is two if not three sets of action to take first we should have an enquiry made up of a number of people a third of which should be ordinary members, one third council and the resultant third independant secter, if after the enqiery there is found to be a person or persons responsible for this constant unease they should be expelled from the DCS for life.
the second action should be an EGM and the whole of the council should stand down and a new council be ellected at the said EGM.
If (and I hope there is not) a new secretary is to be appointed then I would suggest that the interview panel does NOT contain any persons that have interviewed previous secretaries, that it is an interview panel of 5 people no more than two council members, at least two members, who should have reasonable sized herds and a proffesional person not connected to the DCS.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY BEFORE WE EMBARK ON ANY OF THE ABOVE WE SHOULD DO ALL IN OUR POWER TO TRY TO PERSUADE OUR EXCELLENT SECRETARY TO WITHDRAW HER RESIGNATION and allow the membership time to sort out the problem.
I am prepared to propose that we have a EGM if anyone will second the motion and enough members are interested in their Dexters to want to sort this problem out. any such EGM should be chaired by a non council member and possibly by an outsider(possibly someone from the RBST) at the EGM all present council members should stand down and a care taker council be elected from those present until there can be a new election.
By the way does anyone know if the herd books or Pediview discs are out yet for 2006 we've not had ours yet and the 2007 ones are due to be prepared in a couple of months time.
If anyone will second it I propose a vote of no confidence in the present council and call for an EGM of the DCS at which a care taker council should be elected from those attending.
as things stand at the moment we shall not be reknewing our membership after Dec 31st,
Bill.

If what is beng said in this topic and is on the grapevine is correct, then I think that certain members of Council are in default of their duties as effectively "directors" of what I understand is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee.
Someone said "surely in this day and age we cannot mistreat employees", well you can, but at your peril. By mistreating an employee, Yvonne or anyone else, the people responsible for the mistreatment have put the DCS at risk of a claim. That is a SERIOUS breach of their duty to the society and is almost certainy is a reason for summary dismissal/removal/resignation. However, the good news is that it may be possible for the DCS to claim the costs back from the person responsible for the problem.
I had a claim last year by a someone who worked for me in similar circumstances but at a very senior level. I could have purchased a large herd of Dexters with the money it cost me, even though in effect, I won the case!
IF what has been said here is correct, then Yvonne has not resigned, she has probably been sacked (constructively) and she has a right to make a claim. It is now an absolute duty for the society and/or individual council members to apologise, take action to ensure it does not happen again, and to consider what to do about the offenders, nomatter who it is and what position they hold. If no attempt is made to rectify the situation, although it now sounds a bit late in the day, then that will add to the success of any claim.
There is also another even more serious aspect to what has been stated in this topic in that if there is indeed a dominant group that is, in effect, diverting resources to their own particular agenda rather than acting on behalf of all members in equal measure, then that is outside their remit and is against the law. I will expand on that if you wish but I need to check some detail first.
The point is, do you feel that the society respresents you and your interests in a fair way, equally with other members, or is it biaised in a particular direction? i.e. Are the funds you provide being used properly and to your liking, in a fair way.

It would seem that the problems within the society grow larger by the day, as we now have members saying that they will not be renewing their membership if things do not change! As I have decided to concentrate on breeding for beef and buying in any replacement cows and bulls required, do I really need to pay a subscription to a 'broken' organisation? How many members are in the same position? How many will choose to lapse their membership if things do not improve?
If we decide to attend the meeting what are we likely to find out? will there be open debate, will the guilty own up or deny? Without Yvonne's side of the story we do not know who to accuse and whether anyone within council that is not in this clique has the correct information and willpower to do anything about it. The consequences of doing something could be the begining of a rough ride for the society, the consequences of doing nothing consigns the society to a slow and lingering death.
Getting to Stonlegh is a pig from here in the southeast, if I can be persuaded that some good will come from it I will be there.

Peter I could not agree with you more, where is the grass (pardon the pun) roots support for the hobby farmer who wants to go to the occasional sale and build a nice (but not necessarily) perfect herd. I am going to a sale on Saturday in deepest darkest devon which is advertising 30 dexters for sale they have a 'native' breed sale twice a year (fmd allowing) and that appears to be it in my neck of the woods.
