Does anyone know the rules / regs for sending an over age beast to slaughter and then have him butchered for own consumption??
Can I just ring up my regular butcher and abbatoir or do I need special paperwork , contact DEFRA etc ?
I have had a brief look on the DEFRA website but don't seem to be able to find what I'm looking for
Many thanks
Over - age for slaughter ?

Dominic - You will need to find an abattoir licensed to slaughter cattle over 30 months.
Since the beginning of the year, we have slaughtered four OTMS Dexters through our usual abattoir, which has obtained all the necessary licences. The brain stem is sent off for examination and we collect our beef just as we do for an under 30 month Dexter, packed as requested, after the usual three weeks.
Once collected, we have continued to sell our beef from home to private customers and for home consumption.
For information:
Ensure both ear tags are in place
Clip the hair from the inside of the ear, as the veterinary surgeon in attendance and abattoir operative will need to inspect these against the passport before the animal is allowed to be unloaded.
No forms to complete, just make sure the correct passport accompanies the animal.
Hope you find this helpful.

Try Ensors at Cinderford, Gloucestershire (Forest of Dean) - fully licensed for over 30 months & will cut to your requirements. We have used Ensors on occasions & they also slaughtered two x over 30 months steers for us in 2006; beef had to be collected within two weeks.
