A knees up ! - Do the Dexter people have a Bash ?

Dexters are spread widely but thinly through out the UK,so there must be people like ourselves who never get to meet other dexterites ! I know their are regional societies but do we have a general get togethers ? Myself and Mrs C are quite sociable creatures and we enjoy a bit of a bash . A good few years ago we were members of the Longhorn Society and we had some very good times with the Longhornies at the rare breed sale at Stoneleigh and in additionthey use to have an annual Dinner and get together .
I know you don't keep cattle simply to meet people but its so easy just to stay on the farm and become a recluse !
We live in North Wales ,but travel to the Midlands fairly often are there any social events out there ? To much work makes Jack a dull boy and all that !

Hi John,

If you can suggest what form this would take maybe people would make suggestions, like it, veto it etc.

If Abergavenny is central enough I may be able to host an evening as I do this for other activities but don't as yet have Dexters.

Probably a better idea would be for a bunch of us to meet up at a herd open day, how does that sound. Are there any coming up?

The thing is quite a few of us have a very "farmerly" view on life that all important life stops at the farm gate, some of us only go out for provisions you know.

Me, I get mine sent by Tesco on line, so I don't even need to go to the shops! I do of course have to deal with strangers, non farming folk at that, driving the delivery van but the dog does deserve a bit of entertainment now and then, especially since I got rid of most of the sheep!!!

Don't despair John!

Who said we don't have fun, fun, fun here living our 'reclusive' life. Out in the barn last night at 11.30pm trying to persuade a ewe that I was right and the lamb she was so keen to mother was not hers. Back out at 6am to check, at least the ewe from the previous night had her own twins so she was happy. And then there are the Dexters - a real bundle of fun waiting for the 'inconclusive' cow to have her 2nd test. And the alpacas, some of whom desperately need new homes. Would I find life more worth living if I donned the glad rags and left 'em all to it ..... I think not. :p

Fun ? People obviously have differing ideas as to what constitutes fun ! My intention was never ever to knock peoples chosen life style ,each to their own I say !
I,ve never ever or will be a recluse ! I enjoy country life ,that includes hunting ,fishing and shooting which does get me out to see lots of people .
So you see my enquiry about a possible social side to keeping dexters wasn't a plea from a sad lonely old geezer ! It was just a polite enquiry.

Is there a Dexter Soc Group in your area? I belong to two - the Scottish Group, which as we are so spread out has difficulty in getting all together and the sporadic newsletters are the link and the Northern Group which is much more active...I missed the recent AGM owing to waiting for an overdue cow to calve (she accomplished this only yesterday about 3am!) but this was in Cheshire on a farm visit. I believe most of us really enjoy farm visits for apart from a good chinwag, the talks and walks around give everyone so many ideas, perhaps even to alter the way things are done at home. A great learning occasion.

John, why don't you host an open farm day? Send the word out and I bet you'll have a party going in no time. That's how I get something happening, just do it.

Kathy, who wouldn't mind getting out a little more often but can't leave the sheep too long at this time.

We have quite a few non Dexter get togethers at home but with the exception of people who live on islands geographicaly we are probably some of the remotest dexter keepers. We live on the end of the Lleyn peninsular which is a fair old jaunt for just about eveyone !
Two hours from Chester and a hellish journey from South Wales . As I mentioned in my initial post we nip to the Midlands fairly regularly !
Theres isn'nt any need to worry , I'm not in despair and I really don't need councilling . My post really was along the lines of an " I wonder If ?"

John, if you go to the RBST sale at Melton
Moberay in September which is also the official Dexter Sale they have a pre sale bash on the Friday night with the sale on the Saturday. Also if you go to the Dexter Cattle Society web page and go to group news there are several groups which may be of interest to you and have contact details.
