The government is hoping to encourage cattle owners in England to join the scheme to try and eradicate BVD from England, Scotland is already free and Wales is well on its way, so they gave vets so much money to encourage cattle owners to have their herds tested you pay a set fee of £50 and they pick up the tab for the rest. However the scheme has been rapidly picked up by a lot of farmers so they have pulled the money for the scheme at the end of Jan, fortunately my vets have taken part and I managed to get my cattle on the scheme and today I had the great news that my herd is BVD free. So I am well chuffed as I can now advertise my cattle as BVD free.

Scotland is far from BVD free yet, but on the way. We are officially TB free though.
All herds must do some screen testing, and are listed on a web site as free or not free. Anyone selling cattle must declare their status to the buyer. It is illegal to move a PI except to slaughter, and they are going to impose a standstill on all herds which have not tested except direct to slaughter. I still have a lot of testing to do for clients this year, but those done so far are showing improvement on last year, so I am hopefull the system is working.
In herds where it looks like there may be PI animals bloods can be pooled in 10's and tested for virus by PCR, then only groups showing positive need to have individual tests done - the lab folk have done a lot to cut down the numbers of tests needed and so cut the cost.
This is the sort of issue I wanted DCS to establish a health and welfare committee, to help members understand it all but others saw no need for it. "If we have a health and welfare committee people will think we have problems" I was told by others on Council.
