ai or bull
ai or bull
My little dexter cow has come bulling again and I have kept her away from the large commercial bulls we have do I AI or are there any hire bulls in east yorks.I have plenty of semen on storage from some old bulls ,but the lady likes the boys .The last two calves have been by a very large limmi .I have just had killed for my own use a limmi cross heifer from this dexter cow .Magic is small and I think she is getting on now to be risking it with a larger bull.

Not answering your question helena but can I ask what the beef was like and what weights you got? Limmi/Dexter cross won big awards at a beef show in Oz a few years back. I'm not thinking of a Limmi, we've been using an AA, got a Stabiliser now and may go back to Dexter next year or two. Just interested to know your thoughts.
If you're looking for Dexter semen, I started a thread a couple of weeks back and there are answers on there.
PS. I don't put my oldies (or heifers) to a big bull. Too much weight on them if a bull and too big calves for them to cope I feel. Calves as big as mom at 8 months! Mind you, some Dexter calves can be pretty big, I've had AA-Dexters far smaller than some pure Dexter. So I'd be looking for a small calf producing bull, non-short too, so you know what you're getting.

Our bull, Graystone Ilex is returning to East Yorks next week, if that's any good? He's LL, black & has thrown a few dun calves, if that makes a difference one way or the other. http://www.grassfeddexterbeef.co.uk/bull-hire
Alternatively Christine Hodgson, at atwick, has Lexy's son available to hire iirc http://www.kirisedexters.co.uk
