Dexter cross Australian Lowline

Post by Adam Lowline »

Hi, we have joined this forum after weeks of enjoying reading all the various discussions. We have got 3 dexter cows, 1 heifer and a dexter calf. We also have two Australian Lowline bulls ( pure Angus)that were the first ones to be bred in the UK. We have put these to our cows and are imminently awaiting the arrival of possibly the first cross in the Uk.
We wondered what your thoughts are, and if anyone has, or would, consider the Australian Lowline as a good pure beef cross with a Dexter?

Hi Adam, welcome to the board.

That should be a really nice cross, but I suppose the question is what do you want to achieve?

If you want a small, chunky beef animal, sounds like that's what you'll get. I guess you'll end up with a Dexter-sized animal, a bit beefier with more back muscling and more backend. I'd also guess that, as Lowline have been honed down genetically, you'll end up with something that looks a lot more like a Lowline than a Dexter.

As Angus is well-marbled and Dexter normally is too, the beef should be yummy.

Only trouble I can see, if indeed it is a problem, is that the offspring will be too small for any general market/butcher but presumably you'll sell direct or to special butchers?

It's an interesting project, wish you well and I would be very interested to hear how you get on.

Can I ask how big are your Lowline bulls compared to your average Dexter bull?
