When IS a cow bulling? - Which cow is the one that is bulling?

I have noticed over the years that folks that are new to farming and/or Dexters sometimes have trouble working out when a cow is bulling and which one it actually is that needs AI . It is quite tricky really if you haven't done it before so I decided to write a short post, which may help.

It isn't always as obvious which cow is bulling as you would maybe think. Never jump to the conclusion that the cow underneath is the one that is bulling and call the AI man as it could easily be wasted money! Wait and watch.

The cow underneath probably IS the one bulling if she stands stock still. Wait and see if they change places, does the other also stand still? Then she is bulling as well but double check them both.

If the underneath cow moves the one on top should be the one that is bulling but she may have moved for another reason - keep observing and find out which one is actually ready for service.

It is important to spend time observing the cattle to make sure you are correct in your decision. If you are checking for bulling ready to AI check every few hours - last thing at night and first thing in the morning.

Very occasionally a cow will appear to be bulling right through her pregnancy but she should not stand, she should move a little when underneath but there is always one that is different!

In an ideal world with and AI man on tap the perfect time to AI your animal is just after standing heat.
