If I am to keep some dexters at my friends farm, what do I do about numbers? Do I use her herd number and holding number? Do I get a new herd number and use her holding number? What happens re. paperwork? Does she keep all the movement records etc. or do I?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jamie,

I have a tenant on the majority of my acreage and they have their own herd number. In my opinion you will be able to use your freinds holding number and as you will be the keeper of the animals you will need to keep the paperwork.

To be absolutely sure why not ring your Local Council Offices and ask for Trading Standards, the Animal Health are within Trading Standards. They are the people to ask.

Hope this helps.

Jamie,

You need your own herd and holding number. But you need to set up a link to the holding number of your friend to indicate you keep the cattle there.

For the holding number I seem to remember it is the Rural Payments Agency you need: 0845 603 7777

And Animal Health for the Herd No. 01452 627400

Regards,

Colin.

I think the "link" to your holding will also allow you to move cattle between the tw holdings without any shutdown period.

We graze a couple of acres at the vicarage a mile away.

the link to our holding allowed us to move cattle during the last foot & mouth outbreak without licences.

A farmer has some heifers on our farm. He was contacted last year to advise he needed to be TB testing to move from our holding to his holding, even though there was a link set up, because we are in a two year testing area. I was surprised at this but I did not follow it up because they were his stock and it didnt affect us.

If you are going to use the same land can you not just add it to your holding number whilst you have the agreement in place?

Forgot to add also when we had a cattle inspection re eartags and paperwork etc we were advised both the landowner and the owner of the stock needed to have a record of movements.

To move cattle from your holding to say some 'grass keep', even if it is the next field, that you may have rented, you will either have to do a pre-movement test or you need to take up 'sole occupancy'. To do this contact your vet as they deal with it, they will come and inspect the premises and complete the form, you will also need the map ref number for the land. I am not sure how it would work on a 'friends' farm but if you are not using the same fields and are not running animals with theirs I would suggest you have your own holding number. This would then save you any problems should you friend get shut down.

When we were inspected re movements and eartags they did not ask to see any records from our landlord. We do not inform him of movements on and off the holding, well only verbally. Our holding number is our home address with a link to his holding which has to be renewed every year.
