We recently lost a heifer which had typical symtoms of staggers which naturally was very distressing and all attempts to revive were in vain.

The vet was surprised that with our actions and catching the occurance so early that the heifer went down as fast as she did so we looked at other possibilities while tests were being done.

We found that someone had dumped an old car battery over the hedge in the bottom of the field and the lead terminals had been well licked - this was confirmed as the cause.

Just to say please check your fields - especially old tractor batteries, old lead paint etc etc we wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else - if I catch who dumped the battery i will make him tag the new calf to start with - her mother sent me flying yesterday - I don't dare say what else i will do to him.

Commiserations... a dreadful happening. With the possibility of rubbish charges I believe we shall have ever more problems with dumping and am sure you are right to recommend a careful watch
