Melton Sale prices - interesting!

Aquick summary of todays prices at Melton breed sale.
Top female:- Needles Hall Cinnamon ( breed champion, short black nearly 5 years old)) 1750gns
Top Bull:- Watercress Wriggler ( non short black 16 months 2300gns
Top heifer Carich Rose ( short red 20 months old) 700gns
A lot of absent vendors ( maybe 50%) for whatever reasons, which can be annoying if you spot something in the catalogue that is worth a look and when you get there its not forward.
Prices variable, with a number taking there cattle back home, but some sold outside the ring. Not as may buyers as last year but the sale was hit and miss as to going ahead so that didnt help.

We couldn't have the top and bottom prices in future could we, or the average price? It is all very well knowing what these high flying animals make but what is really needed is something the rest of us can relate to.

For anyone interested in the complete sales prices Melton Market usually have thier market report available online in the nextweek.I think there were 29 animals that went through the ring,and 32 that weren't forward.My personal thoughts on the prices were that they were alright.There were plenty of buyers for the above average quality stock (it was encouraginging to see new breeders buying too with confidence)The animals which struggled to sell were mostly non short , and black.These were in a majority.I don't think the prices on these would have been any better even if there was an abundance of buyers,but they would have sold.Even so thier prices were fairly good.Two vendors who had entered stock but didn't take them ,told me they wish they had not been so pessamistic ,as it turned out thier cattle probably would have sold for reasonable prices.It was good to catch up with everyone socially and the high prices really lifted the mood.Finally a huge thankyou to melton who had worked round the clock to ensure we still had a market this year,it may have been a more scaled down event than normal but was still worthwhile and a new breed record was set.And that will benifit all of us.

Will a list of buyers and sellers and prices be printed in the next bulletin? I found this very useful last year and it makes a good record of prices over recent years.

Our two new heifers have settled in well but there are now two groups in the field, the old girls and the youngsters!
