Hi Kathleen,
I do know that diet affects the foot growth in dairy cows but the only thing that comes to mind is that too much protien made them grow too fast, therefore causing all sorts of problems, arguments in the cattle crush and increasingly bizzare Heath Robinson attempts to tie the offending leg still to trim the foot of half a ton of very angry cow. (Why is it that they are so placid and accepting of everything else but try to trim their foot and they have the temper, speed and tenacity of a wild stallion!)
I am sure someone else can comment much more knowledgably on feeding for feet.
