Duffryn Diary
Re: Duffryn Diary
Hello Saffy,
Am wondering - is the 13 year old dun cow polled? Or just dehorned really well...
Regards
Kathleen

That is Woodmagic Petrel - she is dehorned.

Re: Duffryn Diary
Yes Margaret and Beryl was rather fond of old Split Ear wasn't she. A great old cow but can be stubborn, she has been here a while now and will not go over our little tiny ford to the one field, despite wading through the brook at Bunksland all her life, so we have to work around it.

Re: Duffryn Diary
Here is a strange thing. I read this yesterday and thought "split ear, well one of my Woodmagic heifers is "Torn Lug", she came from Beryl with the heifer in one hand and the tag which had had several attempts to get in the ear with her. My pliers wouldn't take Beryl's tag, so she still has a torn ear and no big tag. Guess who her dam is - yes, she is Petrel's daughter. I must try to get a photo of her ear - tjhere is hardly enough in any one section to put the tag in!
Her name is Peahen 3rd. Petrel's dam was Palm Chat, dam of Hedgehog 3rd.
Is this an example of Lamarkism?

Re: Duffryn Diary
Thank you for the reply Saffy,
I am surprised - she looks polled - I have only ever seen horned cattle with a head that shape when they have been surgically dehorned at a young age.
Thanks again.
Regards
Kathleen

Re: Duffryn Diary
Hello,
A member of Holland Dexter has purchased a English cow wich has the same shape of head like split-ear!
or does the colour mislead me.
Our question, is this cow dehorned or polled?
thanks in advance

Re: Duffryn Diary
If this is Knockbrandon Ursula, born 2003, she does contain a lot of Woodmagic blood. She is not registered as polled and there does not appear to be polled genes in the pedigree.

Re: Duffryn Diary
Duncan, indeed it is Ursula.
Her calf sired by Cobthorn Dannyboy is 6 months old now. There is no horn growth seen yet!
I think Dannyboy isn't polled, maybe Ursula is?
Does anybody know if the knockbrandon herd was disbudding their female calves?
Another possibility is that there will come scurs?
A 3rd possibillity is that the AI-man has changes straws with p/a Aberdeen Angus, wich is highly unlikely.
above: almost 3 months old, below: a half year old
1) do you think this calve is polled?
2) do you think it could be a dexter-angus cross?

Re: Duffryn Diary
Cow & calf both look like they have horn curls, and the cow looks like she has spectacle disease (copper deficiency??), unless that is just the photo.

Re: Duffryn Diary
By 'horn curls' I mean the way the hair lies, like a tuft of hair or a whorl.
They certainly don't look polled to me anyway.
