Hello all

This question may sound dumb but there is a good reason behind it! When, from experience, do bull calves first become capable of successfully covering (short) cows?

I have had a registered short leg bull aged 10 or 11 months successfully serve a non-short cow. This was a planned mating. I have had an unplanned teenage pregnancy when both animals were about 6 or 7 months old.

I had a short legged bull who served a commercial lim x heifer, I think they must bat their eyelids at them and get them to lie down :p :p :p

An old cow guy told me (seriously) the cows will stand in a depression in the ground when the bull is small. Also that the young bull will almost take a flying leap! Horses cant do that, but young bulls must be like little buck goats..

Credit goes to Richard who runs the PDCA One Blog to give members of the Purebred Dexter Cattle of America society members something of interest almost every day. It is amazing how he gets info, quite a bit of UK dexter news, eg the accident which injured Jan McCourt was reported, some show results get mentioned, Ilsington Bramble's height has been discussed. I look at it almost every day, just a quick peek to see if there is anything new of interest

Another point of interest on this site ( PDCA One Blog) is the links. Have a look at the online pedigree stuff the USA has, and compare to what we have. I have no idea of the organisation or economics of it all, but they certainly manage to maintain a marvelous on line list of pedigree animals many with pictures available.
