Hi,
Some of my red calfs have black noses and some reds. What is the difference in breeding value?

Sorry I do not know enough to reply to this as fully as I should, but the difference is probably due to there being more than one red gene. I associate pink noses with more uniform reds and darker noses with reds which tend to have darker areas especially the fore quarters, but I might be talking total nonsense here and hope someone more knowledgeable on genetics will speak up The fact that I prefer a good uniform red to a more shaded sort is personal and does not really mean one is more valuable than the other.

Why do they take points off for the black nose? Don't think that happens in the USA, how about Australia or NZ?
I was discussing this with someone the other week and wondering why there are the two nose colors on reds? Anyone know whare it comes from? do older red animals have black noses? Anyone have any pics of older reds with black noses?
