Sale Reports Carlisle & York

Post by Mark S »

Hi,

Hoping to hear what prices were like for the Dexters entered at both Carlisle and York. Just read Louisa post on her sales, noticed in the catalogue for York there was a large herd dispersal. We’re the sufficient buyers for this number of cattle or were they picked up by the meat buyers ?

How are breeders faring with Dexter sales from the farm, I have been trying to sell a cracking in calf Red Heifer from home but there seems to be no demand at present.

Where and how are you advertising her? Have you worded the advert well and taken a good enough photograph?

I have - so far always managed to sell mine privately. I pop them on my own Herd Page, other pages that I'm allowed and on here. I have had good success, even exported several times. People like to see what they are getting and also know what you are asking POA can put people off. Decide the price and put it on the advert. If she is worth £1000.... put that on the advert! Is she classified? If not was her Dam classified, was the bull classified, if they were VG or Ex put that in the advert? Every detail that will help put it out there!

It can take a while, sometimes weeks - months sometimes but I have never failed to sell them for the price I feel they should make.

Good luck with your sale.

Mark- try asking Kay & Steve Darnbrook for Carlisle & York prices. They were at both sales. We can't communicate as I don't do social media and they don't do email.

Hi Louisa,

Thanks for getting hold of the prices for the York sale. Looking at the prices It would certainly appear to be a buyers market. The returns on these animals do not reflect the costs involved in keeping and breeding Pedigree Dexters. It would be interesting to know how many of these Dexters were bought for breeding purposes or went straight for meat.

I attended a Pedigree Dexter dispersal Sale at Leek market in Staffordshire early last year and whilst a few animals were bought by Pedigree breeders, the majority of cows Including cows with calves at foot ( 2-4 months old) were bought by buyers for the meat trade.
