Hi there,

I have a few steers that are about ready for slaughter, and I just wondered if anyone could tell me - roughly - how much they are likely to weight? They are about 27 months and long legged. Want to know for the purpose of what they might fetch at market.

Hi
If you go back through the topics there have been several relating to weights live and on the hook. For example "Pricing Beef" and "steer finishing" and similar topics will give you loads of useful information. It takes a while skimming through the topics mind.

Beware if you are thinking of selling at a commercial market, you may stuggle to get a decent price, they dont know what they are buying.
There are dexter people who are looking for steere who would probably pay at least £1 per kilo liveweight for a well finished steer. Your weights could vary from 350kg to 420/450kg.

I have just marketed a long steer. He was 22 months old. Sorry didn't get a weight before he went in. I ended up with 285 lbs of meat. The ribs were on the bone. I kept all of the fillet (breeders treat) and some other meat. I gave away approx 45 lbs of meat and received £516. Cost of killing and cutting and bagging £195. I sell mine quite cheaply £2.60/lb in meat packs of circa 35 lbs.
Hope this gives you an idea

I agree with Mark. Weight suggestions are right and advice to keep well away from conventional markets a definite course of action. Try local speciality butchers.
£1.00/liveweight, £2.00 deadweight for good quality animals is the normal going rate for those who market dexter beef themselves, and buy in steers/heifers.
