Once again there are hopes for an auction sale of Dexters in Scotland. An attempt to establish a sale in Scotland two years ago did not go very well, but following much discussion with staff at Lawrie and Symington it has been decided to try again to establish such a sale. The Lanark sale of Rare and Minority breeds of cattle, sheep, poultry and occasionally horses is well situated in Central Scotland, well timed in relation to seasonal availability of stock for sale, is already an established sale for other breeds and species
It is anticipated that penning arrangements will be easier for public access to view the stock prior to the sale, that pre sale adverts such as in Scottish Farmer will mention Dexters rather than just cattle, and the sale will be through the ring rather than in the pen as was the case last time.
Several entries are already assured, please contact Lawrie and Symington on 01555 662281, Jo Kemp, Scottish Group Chairman or Duncan MacIntyre for more details.
Hopefully it will be an occasion for Scottish members to meet whether selling, buying or just along for the chat.

Re: Scottish Dexter Sale Lanark 2nd September
Hello Duncan
i would be interested to hear if there are any Scottish breeders attending the sale and to find out at what time the sale will take place on the 2nd sept?
Can I assume all cattle will need to be BVD certified?
And lastly is there any plans for a sale of dexters at Carlisle this year?
Cheers.

Re: Scottish Dexter Sale Lanark 2nd September
Hello Rossco,
The entries for the Lanark sale close on 12th August, so not all will be in yet, but I do know that several entries are committed. Burnside Dexters will have 3 females with calves at foot there. The exact time of sale will probably not be known till catalogue comes out, but Laurie and Symington may give you an idea of time if you phone them - 01555 662281. All Scottish cattle being sold, whether market or private, must be from a BVD negative herd or be individually tested for BVD Antigen, or cows may be declared free if their calf is tissue tested free.
The Burnside herd is Accredited Free for BVD, IBR, and Lepto, and has Risk Level 1 Johnes Disease Status, which is the best Johnes category.
There will be a sale at Carlisle on Saturday 17th September, usual wee show before it as far as I know, and quite a number of Dexter breeders usually meet for a meal on the Friday night.
Burnside Dexters will have two females with calves at foot and one heifer at Carlisle.
I also have one mature bull and one young bull potentially for sale.

Re: Scottish Dexter Sale Lanark 2nd September
There is a good entry for the Lanark Dexter Sale on 2nd September, somewhere between 20 and 30 animals I think, which is good for a first real effort. Now we need the buyers! So we all need to put it about as much as we can. Scottish Farmer today says 30. They should be going through the ring about 1pm.

Good luck for the sale tomorrow. Lots of people bidding and better prices than across the border.

Re: Scottish Dexter Sale Lanark 2nd September
Thanks for the good wishes, I hope we do have a good sale, we have had a couple of false starts at a Scottish sale, the last two years ago poorly advertised by the Auctioneer and then the cattle sold with little warning to those in the market in the pens at the edge of the area in use - not allowed to go through the ring. Hardly any of those present sold unsurprisingly.
However Jo Kemp, current Chairman of the Scottish Group committee, and myself have had a lot of discussion with Lawrie and Symington over this one, it is also a big sale of Shetlands, Hebrideans and a wide variety of rare breed sheep, a few goats. Shetland cow, and about 120 lots of poultry, so it will be a busy day.
If tomorrow goes well we will hopefully be looking at including a pre sale show next year.
