A good range of prices today, from 240 upto 4900 for the fabulous looking Saltaire Apple. A good crowd of people ringside with a fair few bidding. Would have loved to have bought a couple of heifers but as we have just lost half our grazing I had to leave the cheque book and trailer at home.

I do love an auction!

However I do not like the emotion of Dispersal Sales and a frequent phrase heard around the sale ring and Cattle lines today was "what a terrible shame" and it was, to watch the top rated animals of the breed being sold to different parts of the UK and Europe (and these included "literally" the top current Dexter Society animals both in terms of proven Show Success and Linear assessment- the 2015 Dexter Society Bull of the Year, the 2015 Dexter Society Cow of the Year and the breeds highest ever Linear scoring Cow and Bull were all dispersed by Graham and Sam Hunt today).

However on a positive note this dispersal sale of the Northbrook Herd has brought many new people to the breed and has given established breeders a chance to add quality bloodlines and stock to their existing herd (perhaps that is the biggest compliment to pay a breeder by adding their stock to your own herd or show team - I have paid this compliment to the Hunt's today by adding one of their animals to our herd - and there were alot us out there paying those compliments today!).

I have full respect for Graham and Sam Hunt for the class and dignity they showed today in the manner in which they conducted their sale and their exit from the breed. I can only imagine the emotional wrench of parting with over twenty years worth of hard work and careful breeding but they did it in style. All the cattle were in tip top condition, well turned out, bathed, and halter led in the sale ring.

The Northbrook Herd have achieved great success in twenty years many times winning Dexter Society Bull of the year, Dexter Society Cow of the Year, and Dexter Society Herd of the Year (and also achieved the rare phenomenon of all three society accolades at once aka "The Alex Ferguson Triple"!). The week of their exit from the breed the Northbrook Herd achieved the Dexter Society Top scoring Linear assessment marks for both Cow and Bull. Top Sale prices were achieved today even in an uncertain pre Brexit economic climate (and time of farming uncertainty).

I imagine the purchasers today have enjoyed looking at their new purchases tonight with all the excitement of a new herd member and the future breeding plans or showing plans they may have to look forward too. I wish all those people every success and enjoyment with their lovely new cattle.

Most of all I wish Graham and Sam Hunt a very happy, healthy and successful future in whatever venture they choose next (this one was well and truly successful)

Best Wishes to all.

I think you have said it all Lisa, I fully support everything you have said. I have bought a couple of the cows yesterday along with a nice little heifer, adding to cattle I have bought and used in the past, Graham and Sam have had an impact on my herd which has served me very well.Thank you both and good luck with your shorthorns, which from what I saw, will prove to be another successful future venture.

Attended and viewed animals and can say all were a credit to Graham and Sam. From prices realised can only assume some animals have been brought for showing purposes as well as to improve and start herds. I hope those that bought animals for showing are aware that in the 2016 showing rules, there now appears a rule that the exhibitor must have officially owned the animal for 3 months prior to ENTRY for the show. Can only hope this rule did not put buyers of as this takes out well over half the showing season. Have checked on line and cannot see anywhere in the minutes any discussion on putting this rule in the showing rules and etiquette guide. I hope the vendors were pleased with prices and wish them well with what I am sure will be a successful future with their Shorthorns. Peter Gardner.

The society showing rules you are referring to are for DCS show points only. The society has no authority over what shows decide in their rules, the society can stop no one from showing and to suggest that is a little off the mark. Show society rules are always in their schedules and vary greatly so always be aware of them before you enter.

Mark, you may well be right, if you scroll down to page eight of The Showing Rules and Etiquette, it clearly states "in any pedigree Dexter class an exhibitor must be a member of the DCS and officially owned the animal for 3 months prior to the entry of the show. " Based on this if I had bought a animal from the sale I would not have entered in a show for 3 months. I find this pretty self explanatory. I may have missed it but cannot see anywhere where it refers to the three month ownership referring to the point system only. If I have missed it or if I am wrong I stand corrected. Pete.
