I have just had a call. From a gent - said he was ringing on behalf of a friend as he wanted a Dexter calf to rear on the bottle. He sounded a bit put out when I enquired as to why and he didn't want to waste too much time on the phone listening to an explanation that Dexters are a suckler breed and therefore unless there is a tragedy are reared on the cow. I didn't get a chance to explain about red tape!!!
He said his "friend" had kids and didn't want anything that would push them about, they wanted one to rear on a bottle.
Just wondering about being vigilant if we have young calves at the moment? They are easy to transport and if the cow is quiet??? Good job that some cows are protective perhaps?!

It sounds like someone who likes their Christmas meal very young...
Re: Calves as Christmas prezzies???!
Could well be Rob...just didn't like it.
My bull is pretty good but there is a cow here that would probably "tenderise" them.....

Posting this for Sally at Frith Dexters as she can't post.
Hi Stephanie Read your posting on DCFS (I can't post!) but maybe this is where your guy got the idea! I sincerely hope he doesn't get any takers. Regards Sally

The most worrying thing is that he wants a single calf, presumably to keep on it's own (assuming I was wrong in my first comment).
Re: Calves as Christmas prezzies???!
Not nice is it and I expect some unscrupulous person will sell one - they won't have to feed it themselves over the Xmas period either! But - how far will it get transported and where will it end up?

Re: Calves as Christmas prezzies???!
Nat has a group on facebook called 'Respectful Cow Riding & Ox Training' for people who are interested in non-violent cattle training. The rules are pretty simple and include making no advocation for keeping animals without bovine company or nose bitting. You would think that the 600 members would be interested in the subject, but it's amazing the regularity at which someone will pop up to ask for advice when they are either keeping an animal on it's own or beating it and then they get upset when they're told the solution - it makes you wonder what they expect when joining such a group.

When you have cute things that cost less than a pedigree puppy it isn't surprising is it?
