Calf show sham!!!

Post by nuttalls »

Well, after 80.00 in diesel, 2 days sorting calves, 2hour trip we arrived at thirsk, wow buzzing with angus and dexters lots of them, got to the ring with my 3 and it was full around 25 in class great class, walked round 3 times and then around 10 people where asked to leave the ring by the judge who was puffing and sighing and looked like he cba!!! he never touched or looked at them poor kids. Total disgrace, I took mine to see who,m was good enough to show next year, i did get some rosettes, but there where animals in the line up with extra teats known to me and some could walk better with three legs??? In the last class i walked out told the judge to get his eyes tested and told him he was a w......! lots off people upset today and left before showing had finished, Anne did a great job as usual, but this might have damaged showing dexters for some very nice cattle and people, if any of you read this who where there showing today please dont be downhearted by what happened has most shows are really good fun.It was ruined and spoilt what could have got the next generation inspired!!! sorry to have to post this :( :( :(

certainly a missed opportunity for a photo of the full class entry at the end of judging.

With hindsight may have been better to split class 1 by sex, short/long or into narrower age brackets to reduce numbers.

Would also have been nice to have had heard a few words from the judge at the end of each class to explain his placement of animals.

Was however very pleased with the way our two "novice" calves behaved, even leading straight into the trailer which I don't think they had ever been in until the morning having never been away from home before.

For those of us who arrived later, it was impossible to reverse into the unloading docks as the commercial and Angus people had abandoned their vehicles and trailers. I found one herd from their trailer logo and politely asked if they could move so we could unload and received a very dusty response! There were no mart staff in evidence and the office was deserted when I went to ask if a tannoy announcement could be made. Had to unload everything in the car park and walk the calves in.
Feedback from the judge was not very constructive, mine were last in the pairs because "they weren't much of a pair", being a bull and heifer, one red one black. Fair enough, but I'd taken the calves for the judging experience, which the heifer did not get in the first class.
Having looked forward to this as a fun day out, it was a great disappointment. However, Ann did apologise to those of us still left in the lines after judging and Steve Darnbrook volunteered to judge next year.
Having been pretty much out of the show scene since F&M, I'd forgotten the bad experiences. It does show why DCS has the judge training scheme as the person who was judging is an established breeder but not an official DCS judge.

I did not intend to post to the board on this subject, but feel I must try and clear a few points up.

The problem with the loading bays is one which we are aware of and i have discussed this with the sec of the AA society this morning and we are going to have a meeting before the next show to see if we can sort this out, possibly by making everyone put their vehicle reg on their entry forms and put notice up that anyone leaving their vehicle at a loading bay will have it towed away. It has been a bone of contention with me for the last couple of years and some people are so selfish.

I am not going to comment on the judging, our entry was exceptionable, more than twice we normally receive and most people do not wish to travel to judge a small entry in Nov. However I think most judges would have been very impressed with our wonderful turn out, and a big thank you to every one who made the effort to come and bring their lovely calves, and I can assure you all that we will in future have an approved judge. I will also insist in future that I get the entry forms in earlier (thank you to the people who did send them in) so that I can if necessary split the earlier class as 22 in the first class was incredible.

I will in the next few days get some photo's and the results on the N.E. Group's website.
