I get my calves disbudded when the horns are just showing. Never had a fly problem but if the area does open up and look raw, I spray it with this blue stuff with boron in it.

Hi Jo,
If you go with the rubber ring method you have to ensure that you have done it correctly otherwise you will end up with what is known in the sheep world as a 'rig'. Also keep an eye on mum, I prefer to have a gate between me & her when I am doing this as calves can sometimes protest rather loudly and upset her, which can make her unpredictable.
De-horning was no problem, & they have now been shifted to an outlying hay aftermath. The only problem is that one of the steers has started limping & will not let me near him since the de-horning (I don't think he trusts me any more!) I need to look at him so will need to be a bit cunning to enable me to get hold of him in an 18 acre paddock. I' pretty sure he's just pulled a tendon or something but you still have to check don't you?
The rain is still falling and grass is beginning to show signs of recovery after the prolonged dry spell, its nice to get your feet wet when checking the herd.

Hi all,
Just a quick update about my local area. All the little darlings have been on holiday for about two weeks now and already major headaches. Yesterday just after four in the afternoon a field adjoining my farm was set alight, a 32 acre field of spring barley. Thanks to the quick actions of a member of the public & the fast response of the fire service, half of the field was saved. The culprit was a 13 year old girl.
We are now looking forward to September when they go back to school.
Hope you all have an uneventfull school holiday period.

Ye gods, how the other half lives. Our small current problem is 3 Polish? gentlemen, working locally who claim they can only get a signal for their O2 phones in my top field, so every few days I have to go and clear up beer cans and bottles which they leave there. I've never met (caught) them but the neighbour has. I'm putting up notices and putting down manure which I hope they won't want to sit around in. I found a translation site but I'm a bit nervous about it, do any of you liguists know if nie wchodzic means keep out. I wouldn't like to think it means 'welcome'. I suppose I could electrify the gate????:p
