Yes,
there was one at the Royal show doing the rounds, i didnt sign it although the fees for new members do add up a bit,ie, prefix, transfers etc, but it is a one off cost.

I don't think the DCS fees are high - try comparing them to any pedigree horse/pony society.

What is high? If you have no money then anything can be too much. If you have a large herd then registration fees etc. can put a big dent in your pocket. It all depend on who you are, how many animals you have, & how close you are to the average annual salary. No I have not seen it, if I did I don't think I would sign.

I am responsible for the "Petition" about fees. I was told I was the only person concerned about the costs so I decided to see if I was! Not so it seems.
[I have no vested interest in fees as a life member, and fees are paid out of the farm business].
I sell semen and talk to a lot of people. I am concerned about the number of people with Dexters who are not joining the society and WE ARE THEREFORE LOOSING PEDIGREE CATTLE FROM THE NATIONAL HERD AND LOOSING VALUABLE GENETIC MATERIAL, that is my worry. I have loved this breed for a long time and I do'nt want to see us end up with more commercial Dexters than pedigree ones.
I encourage people to join the society and it used to be that they could not be bothered with paperwork - nothing we can do about that - but now the emphasis has changed and the reason given is because the initial cost of joining is too high.
I worked out the cost for somebody with 2 heifers joining the society and it came to £85.00, a lot, especially when one considers the value of the animals. We aren't a mega bucks breed yet!
Also a new rule has been brought in that says you have to transfer within 30 days or the costs will double. Transfer fees have gone up 100% already - no business puts up fees 100% in one fell swoop. [Incidentally,if I sell anything then I am not going to date the transfer certificate].
All I want is a debate at the AGM, not a discussion in the open forum, and a proposition on the agenda for members to vote on so you can all have your say.
I think we need to cut the initial joining cost down by doing away with the joining fee or the prefix registration fee and getting rid of the "30 day rule for transfers". Let us encourage new members.
I realise that a business has to be viable but as a charity we do not need to make a profit. If we need to generate more income then we need to do it another way or cut our costs down.
I have a lot of signatures already but if anybody else wants to sign please phone and I will email you a copy. My number is in the bulletin and herd book.
I don't expect many internet users will be bothered to sign. if you are on the internet then you can probably afford the costs!!
Di Smith.
P.S. Please be aware that there is nothing underhand about this as a copy of the "petition" was given to the chairman of Dexter council at the Royal Show.

I am not at all sure why we should be worried about growing numbers of unregistered Dexters. Look at any numerically large breed and see what proportion are registered. This is a fact of life for the larger breeds and we will learn to live with it as the number of Dexters grows. As long as the number of registered Dexters is not falling I see no need to worry. The price difference between registered and non registered stock will pay for the Society fees - if you are eating them they need not be registered.

Just put my side of the argument on fees,as Treasurer of the DCS I have not recieved one actual letter of complaint about Society fees, I recieved two emails from individuals who have voiced there concerns and I have personnally addressed them, I am happy to have the matter discussed at the AGM, but I do feel a little agrieved when a very senior member goes touting for signatures on a petition against something that the whole of Council has agreed on. or is their another agenda? Is this the way we want to conduct our buisness by petition? I am not going to put the why's and why nots on this very well read sight but will be happy to email any MEMBER who would like a few facts a figures. Also the accounts for 2004 will be out directly with the AGM papers.you can also look a the profit and LOSSES for the last six years by going on to the Charities Commission website and looking under theTHE DEXTER CATTLE SOCIETY.
