New Outlet for Dexter Beef
New Outlet for Dexter Beef
Here is the link to the Company who will be supplying Marks & Spencer with Dexter Beef in the near future. A spokesman for Finnebrogue addressed the AGM in Newcastle outlining their plans and while there is still some dotting of i s and crossind op ts this could become our major outlet for pedigree registered beef in the near future and also put some more competition in the marketplace.

Will they be buying direct from individual producers or through crossgar or similar - how would I get involved with supplying them if I could?

Re: New Outlet for Dexter Beef
That is absolutely fantastic news. Either M&S or Waitrose, top of the bunch, couldn't be better and Dexter Beef deserves that special place. Well done to everyone involved. Now dexterdom needs to breed, breed, and breed because once the end-customers have tasted it, it has the potential to sell better than any other beef, no doubt about it. And hopefully, no more jokes at the market about toy cattle, but instead reactions more like Wagyu gets, and prices at market to match .

No they don't. There is quite enough hype out there as it is - let the slack be taken up first.Broomcroft wrote: Now dexterdom needs to breed, breed, and breed

I hope so too but I have been told that this is just an Irish thing - no plans for outlets/collections over here.Broomcroft wrote:Well hopefully, that'll be after about a weekJac wrote:let the slack be taken up first.

Re: New Outlet for Dexter Beef
Not neccessarily a let down Clive,it might be a blessing.Once supermarkets get hold of a product they try to dictate what prices they pay i.e as little as possible. As with milk, the farmer gets a pittance for their hard graft and the supermarkets get all the profit.Somebody recently posted a suggestion to form a co operative for Dexter producers.I would suggest thats the way to go but I'm thinking that it would need somebody with plenty of time and knowledge in how to go about it. Re: New Outlet for Dexter Beef
Well we certainly have lots of very clever producers, some of whom have a good bit of the know how needed but maybe not the time but lets hope a bit of prompting might start something going.

Re: New Outlet for Dexter Beef
It would be a shame if the supermarkets got a stranglehold on Dexter production Stephanie, but it could easily happen.Imagine raising hundreds of animals on the promise of a good price, only to be told that "demand had fallen"and that your beef was no longer required unless of course, you were willing to accept a lower price.

Re: New Outlet for Dexter Beef
Firstly, I didn't mean "What a let down" as in it's a waste of time, I think it's incredibly good news. I just meant that I felt like a child that had been told they were getting a new bike for Christmas, then at the last minute, sorry it's the kid next door, or something like that . I'm still very pleased for my friend next door though .
It's great marketing for the breed, whether you're supplying them or not IMO. You're right Andy, there are risks as well if you base everything on one large outlet.

I see Waitrose have taken on Red Ruby Devon beef. They're all at it.

Beef Shorthorn is another native breed the supermarkets are interested in.
