A.I. Young heifer

Post by John999 »

My young heifer has been bulling yesterday and today. She is 17 months old and a small short.
Do you think I can try to A.I. her next month, or should I wait.
Thanks
John.

calving at 27 months should be fine, providing she is just a small (in size) but a healthy animal, what i mean by this is, as long as she is growing well and is a thrifty type of animal who is going to be small in comparison to your average short leg, then all should be fine with careful bull selection.
on the other hand if she is a slower growing animal in comparison or lacking thriftiness, or poorer for any reason then i would wait a couple more months until she has grown on.
the biggest question i would have to ask myself is, "is this the type or size of animal you would want to breed from to produce offspring possibly of the same stature". hard decision sometimes and without seeing the animal hard to comment accurately.
hope this helps a little, paul

Always a difficult one deciding when your heifers are ready to put to the bull or AI . I don't bull or AI until at least 18months and if i am not sure i would be waiting until at least 20 months . If you are the keeper of the hobby Dexter time is not so important and the welfare of the heifer comes first and the selection of the bull important . I would wait . :)
