Is there an online map of the flood / danger areas available?

Google crisis response, Qld flood.
Ripple effect beginning now, we can't have our cattle tested until further notice, ie for PV or genetic conditions.

Yes Marg, the Uni in Qld are still flooded out - apparently underwater. We will keep everyone updated when we find out from the Vet School when things are back on track. Be a while though I would think.

On the other hand - in West Australia - they are having raging bushfires near Perth!!

And the latest weather is there is also some flooding in Victoria.
The BOM maps dont look to good for the whole east coast as far as water inundation goes.
Whilst in the west coast - they fry!!! Its a bloody big and diverse land.

So far we have not heard of any Dexter cattle being lost, lots of fences gone, but mostly the cattle seem to be safe - owners had time to move them to high ground - albeit rather muddy in the East.

Hi Denise

I am in the West, and it is hot and really dry. Not sure how many homes were lost in the fire at Lake Clifton this week, they are not letting them all back in yet so haven't said how many are homeless. It is a semi rural area so lots of small blocks (2.5 - 5 acres) with horses, chooks, some cows and sheep etc. so many are worried about their pets.

We live in a very diverse country don't week? Was looking at BOMs predictions and the East and top of the country seem to be in for more wet weather - we would love some over here but NOT that much! :p We have had one of the driest years on record so fires are never far from our minds.

Wishing everyone on the East all the best.

I'm back after losing the electricity for a couple of days, wires went into the Clarence River.

As everyone knows Brisbane is flooded, how's your family Margaret?

So many still lost, the magnitude is terrible... we're lucky our property didn't flood but gee whiz the creek was backing up as the Clarence (which it runs into) peaked and it was high and a big river, they call it 'The Mighty Clarence' some fool tried to cross a bridge on our road that was under water and yesterday when I could get through it was sitting across the road covered and full of mud... why do people risk their lives driving through water. ???

Rebecca, I have to say fires scare me more than flood. Other than Toowoomba everywhere else did get warning, sadly many just don't think it will happen to them. But Toowoomba was not a flood area and it was the bank of a river that caused the carnage. Take care in those fires.

Hi Everyone

There were 10 houses lost in the WA fires, I spoke to one fellow Dexter breeder there and the fire got within 2 kms.

Here in Tasmania we have received 285 mm of rain in the past 3 days and there is localised flooding, we had sheds flooded this morning but they have quickly subsided. Some areas are not so lucky with towns evacuated and rivers breaking their banks. Many roads are cut also. We are lucky to have some high country to move the cattle too!

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for us

Hope everyone manages to keep safe and dry.

Hi everyone - just to let our Aussie listers know - the Qld uni will be closed for genetic testing until at least the 19th January - due to the major roads being damaged, staff can not access the uni site.

The good news on that one is - apparently the generators have kept the freezers and fridges - whch house all the genetic material that is sent for testing etc - cold and the automatic alarms have not gone off - so the freezers and fridges must have been kept at the correct temperatures by the generators.

Will let u all know when I hear more.

Thanks Denise. Thank goodness for DNA.
We have two calves whose parentage is in question, one late by AI or early by the bull, the other one's dam was joined by a youngster who may have been too young, so I used AI later the same day.
Not sure what planet we're on though, no fires or floods here, touch wood, and our creek has stopped flowing which is normal for this time of year. We could still get our share of strife so no survivor's guilt just yet.
Thoughts and commiserations to all those who have been effected in any way by fire or flood. No Happy New Year for many.

Hi Marg, hopefully we will be back on track soon.

Dorothea Mackellar most certainly had Australia down pat with her famous poem - a land of drought and flooding rains. On the east coast its the flooding rains, on the west coast its the dry weather with deliberately lit bushfires in some places!!!

For our non-Aussie listers - the east coast and west coast are 5 hours flying time apart from each other - so its a helluva big land to get youre head around!

I was asked by one of our promotion groups to take our DCAI merchandise "Shop" out to their next field day - had to refuse, its a 2,000 km round trip !

Hear the UK is battening down for another bit of bad weather - more snow coming ?
