A new rare and native breed sale for this year to be held at the Shrewsbury Auction Centre.
For further details contact John Rossiter, Shrewsbury Auction Centre, Bowman Way, Shawbury Turn, Battlefield, Shrewsbury, SY4 3DR Tel: 01743 462620 Fax: 01743 442815.
This is our local market and we will might be taking Dexters, thinking about it anyhow. It's a new build, nice and clean with masses of parking. Easy to get to off the M54.

Clive you haven't said when the sale is to be held.

Yes, it's 3 July and it's a sale of traditional cattle, sheep and pigs to incorporate the Shropshire Sheep Breeders' Association National Show and Sale (West).
We (i.e. Caroline) will be showing Shropshire Sheep, so if you want to buy some sheep that won't eat your trees (if you follow simple rules), then that's where to go . They're just about the best old breed for carcass quality. We had two tups last year that reached 37-39 kilo off grass and milk alone in 8 weeks!!! We sell them for use in orchards, tree plantations and also vineyards. That's my sales pitch over.
There are also Dexters entered (about 20 at last count) but not from us. I was going to take my reds because I'm changing over to 100% black to match my Angus crosses, but they'll be quite close to calving then so it's a bit unfair to take them and possibly separate them. They could end up changing from a big herd and moving to a small one and losing all their pals just at the wrong time.

Here's a link to the online catalogue for the rare breeds sales at Shrewsbury this Sat 3rd July 2010. THere are about 25 dexters entered plus other breeds, as well as sheep and pigs (no poultry). We'll be there with a group of reds, and we will also be showing Shropshire Sheep (It's their national show and sale west).

Just come back from this new sale which I thought went well for a first-off, quite a few people there but nothing like Melton.
Some skinny young dexters sold for very low prices, but even the better ones didn't get any high prices. I sold one of my cows for 450gn and another for 400gn, then I brought the other two home because I'd set a higher reserve. Shropshire Sheep got some good prices with our shearling ewes getting to up 250 gns.

Fantastic, glad it went well for you - do you think it will happen every year now?

It's worth noting most were all very thin and still had a lot of winter coat. I don't know whether those that Julie has referred to are Mr Stanek's though Alison.
On the bull front, one black shortie bull went for 440gns. There was another but I didn't hear the price.
If the buyer of tag no 56 is reading this...you have got a seriously good quality cow, well done, and I owe you some luck money, sorry forgot!
