Before writing to the powers that be ,can I run this past you lot,.....everyone is anti plastic carriers at the moment,how about a cotton carrier bag with Dexter logo,and info,...the save Harriet the Jersey (who never did have BSE ) group did a great deal of shopping around as this was to be our next fund raiser,before our girl lost her battle against kidney failure,(her owners were not allowed to move her to fresh pasture,so bless her she ate acorns and tanned her inside,) I reckon they should sell for between £5 and£6, is this worth taking any further or not. ( Harriets case is still pending with the E.U. ) Sue

Hi Sue,
one of the things that the Steering Commitee has talked about has been merchandise, and updating what we offer to enable the Society to gain more of its income from sales and less from registrations etc. At the AGM of the South East Group yesterday there was a plea for the sweatshirts etc. to have a more appealing colour. All sugestions should be registered with the Society to enable the new Council when elected to consider. It is my hope that a sub commitee is formed to take a good look at merchandise and how we sell it as I believe we are missing out on what has the potential to generate substantial funds for the Society.

We looked at cotton / linen bags for our farm and the sheep society my wife is in. They varied greatly as to whether they were cotton or linen, linen being expensive, but overall they were very effective, whereas as tea-towels were a ridiculous price by comparison. i think it's a really good idea and something that even if you don't sell them all, you can just keep taking them to events and sending them out to local groups to sell as well, so low risk and fund-raising.

What about design? Any ideas?

Can I suggest we get some with long handles, some with short handles and some with no handles at all. The ones with no handles should also have very weak seam along the bottom, so everything falls out, and a bulldog logo instead of the dexter one.

Duncan, I couldn’t help but laugh, you have a wicked sense of humour!
Martin, I am all for finding alternative forms of income, but I pose a word of caution. We tried this road before, and fell into the trap of purchasing a number of items that sold badly, and finished up by losing quite a lot of money. The bags sound like a very good suggestion, if the purchase price can be kept low, and they can be sold at an attractive price to the buyer, unlike calendars, there isn’t a surfeit of them already. They would provide a good advertisement, as well as giving us some profit.

Duncan what a good idea,if the ones with no handles were made from denim we could claim that their collapse was due to faulty jeans. Sue

You don't have to buy many Beryl, if I remember correctly. But there is a setup cost, but again, it's not huge. It is the sort of thing where you could set it up, and then just order a 100 or however many when you get low on stock. But whatever you think you can sell, divide by ten, then halve it and you'll be nearer the likely figure.
