Hi I'm new to the site and the dexter breed. We have been doing alot of research and are close to buying some dexters, our questions lies with what is a realistic price as this determines whether the purchase and also the number to purchase will be made this year or next.

I have tried to access the for sale page on this site but am not sure whether that as I have a mac the platforms are different and so there is a conflict and therefore it does not work, or simpley there are no cattle for sale right now?

We are looking for polled cow with calf or heifer at foot, or even cow in calf with heifer at foot.

As an aside when it comes to meat do most people use bullocks/steers, keeping any females for future breeding to keep the stock replenished?

Any help would be really appreciated. :)

Hi Caroline, there are plenty of cattle for sale, unfortunately your browser is not formatted to read this site, as our Chris tells me.
A cow and calf should start from as little as £400 upwards.
Yes you are right, steers for meat and good heifers kept for breeding.
If you want breeders details go to the cattle for sale list on the Dexter Cattle Society website, there is a link from this site, or email me your address and i will give you a contact with an animal for sale.
Regards Mark

Delighted to hear of another Dexter enthusiast joining us
Now, Price. I would advise you to visit herds, especially those breeding polled animals as that is the animal characteristic you are definitely looking for. Then, don't be too hurried - if you don't see anything to attract your eye look a bit longer (it's not just for Christmas!) temperament should be high on your list too.
The price will depend on whether you have chosen an animal the owner regards really highly or not. For a very good red animal in calf and with heifer at foot someone paid over £1300 at the Melton sale last year. Age is obviously a factor - I bought good, 9 year old cows and they have given me 3 calves each so far. They were also well used to being handled
The very big question to ask these days is TB test recent?and has there ever been a positive in the herd - if so was the animal culled or was the test wrong?
The ministry vet was here on Monday and he said farmers are being far too relaxed when (re)stocking regarding TB

Good luck
Jo
