We have been told that the colour of the dexter can affect the quality of the meat with the black being the finest, red next and the dun the lowest quality - is this true - we will be replacing our bull shortly and this may affect our judgement. we also have a lovely red female calf who we were considering putting in the herd. (all our breeders are black but our current bull is red)

The flesh under the skin is the same colour no matter what colour the skin is. The meat also tastes the same no matter what colour the skin is. You've been had I'm afraid.

I think someone's having a 'larf', black, red and dun are equally sublime on the plate. Have the colours you prefer in the field.
